Yet more to file in the “How Science Destroyed Life” category. . . First this year we’ve had melamine contaminated pet foods, pork and chicken. Then it was admitted that the world’s Honey Bees are dropping like flies. . . And now it appears that every American is dripping with Perchlorate–an ingredient in the Defense Department’s and NASA’s rocket fuels. So much jet juice is in the American population that it has spurred a $114 Million Dollar Study to determine how toxic it really is, and what the EPA can do to limit it in our drinking water.
And why? What have rockets, space exploration, and the science behind them done for us that we couldn’t have done without? Don’t give me the line that we’ve been to the moon. . .or are beaming pictures of Jupiter back to earth. The only reason I can see for space exploration at this point is because we’ve fucked up this planet so much trying to explore space we have to now make good on the promise and find another, parallel, virgin earth to set about contaminating.
Yes, science–for the most part–is the bane of modernity. Thanks to it we have cloning, Genetically Engineered Cyber Food, melamine, perchlorate, DDT, High Fructose Corn Syrup, Round Up and the scientists and industries who believe they truly are helping humanity by dousing us with this stuff and more. Hopefully, despite science, we’ll live long enough to see the day when the trends are reversed, the damage undone, and the balance of natural life on our one and only, home planet restored. Until then, walk around under an umbrella, purify your drinking water, and raise your own foods.
