In a recent discussion about Country of Origin Labeling–or COOL–I got to thinking that the only true way of knowing which country your food comes from is to buy Locally, from Producers, Growers and Farmers you can know and trust. If more local farmers, producers, and growers would be specific on their material about where, when and how their foods are made they could trump the Government’s stalling tactics over a law which is already on the books, but which the Corporate Food Industry heavily lobbies against.
If we as consumers and as producers want “Food Security” here at home, we are the ones who must bring it about by demanding COOL, demanding tighter borders, demanding increased inspection of imported foods, and demanding–nay, shouting from every roof-top, hillside, mountain and skyscraper–that the USDA start working for US farmers again and make it easier, not harder, for us to get local, sustainable, safe, foods. If that could be the case once again, Country of Origin Labeling would be more acceptable and less an issue.
